So last week !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!

Spent a couple hours on the phone between the unemployment office, IRS, FTC to make sure nothing else had been taken or my info used elsewhere. They put fraud alerts on all my accounts to monitor activity.

Yesterday I went to the Auburn Hills PD and filed a police report. Since the person who filed for unemployment put an address for where the checks were supposed to go, the officer said they’ll get a search warrant for the address and do the raid themselves since Detroit police won’t make it a priority. (the street the unemployment office had is in Detroit near 7 mile and Gratiot AKA a place I’m not going to, to confront someone even with the guns I own).

I’m very fortunate too. The officer said someone filed his taxes in his name last year and it took until November to get his refund check. I honestly thought this was going to take weeks or even months to get cleared up.

So you’re just going to end all your posts with a link to the bro trucks?

Didn’t know you were a Michigander as well, nice!

Not as severe as your case, but I had my resume stolen, while I was searching for a job. It was on Monster.com, and only companies have access to the resumes, so...yeah...

I only found out because after a phone interview, I got called back asking if I knew the person since the resume was identical to mine and decor a different name and phone number. At the time, only three people had graduated with my major at the college, period. Worst part? My resume wasn't that interesting.

I like the sound of this update! Does the thief have any indication that you are onto them?

Sorry to hear this happened, but it sounds like you got all of your bases covered. The police report is the big thing that most people miss.

The IRS will give you a PIN for future filings, which will help. Not only do you need to be concerned about someone filing before you and getting a refund, but also someone using your SSN to work which may result in an aur assessment.

I know, right? I mean, I was on a job hunt for 6 months, no one wanted a newbie Java developer fresh out of college.

Glad you got your bases covered. Like I mentioned in your original post, swift action is your best defense.

Hope they catch them!

The cop was shocked I took care of so much already. Said it makes his job much easier.

Well now that person has my SS number and driver license number. Can you get a new DL number for cases like this?

Other than the unemployment request being denied I doubt it. And since it’s Detroit unemployment, they’ll take their time to notify him.

He also had listed that I have 3 dependents. Guess a wife and 2 cats count?

My father had someone file for a tax-refund in his name last year or two years ago. He actually owed money, but the IRS had no mechanism to accept the payment. Apparently he had a fraud resolution guy (who was pretty good) keeping him up with everything but he was still getting threats (probably automated) from other portions of the agency. Took like 10 months to sort out.

I've been lucky enough to just have a couple CC numbers stolen. Always caught by the CC company and quickly resolved with no effort on my end.

You can give me the address and I’ll drop by on my way home and ask them to stop. As a Detroit-er I’ll be able to relate.

I don’t know to what end the usefulness of a new DL# would be, as its public info (in most states), though I suppose it could be used for work purposes. That’s a “talk to the DMV” issue, though I wouldn’t be concerned.

Honestly the strangest thing is that it’s local to you. Usually I see SSNs being shopped around and the ID thief working in Miami, CA, or the plains.
